Summer of Fonts

July & August are all about letter design!

Gail Anderson - You Are What You Keep
 Thurs, August 19, 7:00 – 9:00 p.m.
 Pratt Institute Manhattan
 144 W. 14th Street, Room 213
 New York City

Maybe you should hang on to that! Gail Anderson, Creative Director of Design at SpotCo, tells why.

In our second lecture in The Summer of Fonts series please join us as we welcome Gail Anderson, the Creative Director of Design at SpotCo, and entertainment advertising agency. She will talk about what has inspired her work over the years, in type, graphic design and art direction, called, "YOU ARE WHAT YOU KEEP."

Gail says "I've always known that I'm a pack rat and am on the verge of becoming one of those hoarders on that TV show... and in the process, discovered that a lot of the junk I've amassed over the years, including childhood artifacts, have popped up in weird ways in the work I've done or have been responsible for."

She discusses how she has found a way to put her bad habits to good use, or at least make an excuse for them. And in her crazy world of "home alone," she has discovered ways to inflict her thinking on others, and make a decent living.

In the end, she says "it's really about, maybe you should hang on to that, you never know, and here's why." She will talk about and show fonts that she has scanned from books and posters, her childhood scrapbooks, and enforce the rule of why you should never let your parents give your stuff away.

Gail Anderson is creative director of design at SpotCo, the New York arts and live entertainment advertising and branding agency. From 1987 to early 2002, she served as senior art director at Rolling Stone magazine. She is co-author, with Steven Heller, or six design books, including New Ornamental Type. Anderson teaches at the School of Visual Arts and currently serves on the advisory boards for Adobe Partners by Design and the Society of Publication Designers. She is the recipient of the 2008 AIGA Medal.
